What is Biblical Counseling?

"Biblical counseling is the personal discipleship ministry of God’s people to others under the oversight of God’s church, dependent upon the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word through the work of the Holy Spirit." (www.biblicalcounseling.com)

Do I Need Biblical Counseling?

Living in a fallen world means we have the potential to experience suffering and difficulties at any moment. Sometimes the challenges we experience can become so overwhelming that we don’t know what to do. When this happens, biblical counselors can help point to the hope readily found in the Word of God. Whether you are experiencing intense suffering, working through interpersonal conflict, or are just seeking God’s wisdom as you navigate this fallen world, biblical counseling is an opportunity for someone to help you hear, believe, and apply God’s counsel from His Word to your struggles.

What Types of Problems Can Biblical Counseling Address?

Through His Word, God has given us everything eequired for life and godliness (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3; 1 Peter 1:24-25; Psalm 19:7-14). In other words, the Word of God is not limited in its ability to address any situation that we may encounter in this life (i.e. physical, emotional, and spiritual).

Since we are both physical and spiritual creatures, the challenges we encounter are often not exclusively physical or spiritual. Often physical suffering impacts our spiritual health (and vice versa). God’s Word addresses these dynamics and provides the wisdom we need to respond in ways that please God.

That said, biblical counselors are not medical professionals. Consequently, biblical counselors are unable to recommend or prescribe any form of medication. However, if you are seeking help because of a recent medical diagnosis or are experiencing any form of physical suffering, God’s Word can still offer hope and direction as you seek to honor Him in the midst of your suffering. As a standard practice, biblical counselors will advise that you receive a routine medical examination with your doctor to rule out any underlying health concerns as you proceed through the counseling process.

What Does the Process of Biblical Counseling Look Like?

Before the first session, you will need to fill out a Personal Data Inventory (PDI) form. This form provides the counselor with basic information about you as well as any specific information you would like to share regarding your current life circumstances.

The first session will usually consist of reviewing the information provided on the PDI form followed by a discussion of what the care plan will look like moving forward.

In every session, the biblical counselor will strive to rely on the wisdom found in God’s Word to offer hope and solutions for the problems you face. But…

Your participation is crucial to the process of biblical counseling. Counselors will assign “homework” in most sessions with the expectation that you complete the growth assignment before the next meeting. These assignments will be tailored to you and your circumstances in order to encourage you toward Christ-likeness. The process of biblical change happens as we participate in the act of putting off our old ways and putting on Christ-likeness (Ephesians 4:17-32; Colossians 3:5-17; Philippians 2:12; James 2:18-26; 2 Corinthians 3:18). Such change does not come about passively. So, your counselor will expect that you agree to work towards this end, empowered by the Holy Spirit, at the recommendation of your counselor.

Concluding the counseling relationship can vary for each counselee. Ideally, you and your counselor will come to a mutual consensus to conclude your counseling. Biblical counseling intends to foster reliability on Christ and not on any one person, counselor, or ministry. In other words, once you and your counselor agree that you have been equipped with the tools necessary to continue walking in faithfulness, your counselor will entrust you to the collective “one-another” care provided by the local church (Ephesians 4:11-16).
